Fascinating documentary excerpt which examines both the professional and personal relationship between Kenneth and the playwright Joe Orton, and looks at Kenneth’s sexuality. It contains very rare interview footage of Orton himself.

@margotdarby I’ll never forget the big laugh that went around the cinema when Joan Sanderson appeared offering to read the shorthand.

Reading Kenny’s diaries at the moment. Got to 1968. They are fascinating, sad and hilarious. He mentions Joe a lot, of course.

No, I’m not. No disrespect taken, I’m mistaken for it a lot. I was quoting Kenneth, I thought it was rather humorous.

@cindylauryn bollocks, no one is ahead of their times, nothing is way ahead of it’s time, when you come around, or are invented, that’s your time

Where are these orgies? Why haven’t we been invited? I love Kenneth Williams.

I think Joe and Kenneth Williams would have had an absolute ball if they had only been born 20 years later (mind you Joe did have a lot of fun).

I love Orton’s writing. ‘Entertaining Mr Sloane’ is my favourite play, but ‘Loot’ is fantastic too. The plays are very readable. Also, John Lahr’s biography is well worth reading. Thanks for posting this.

Indeed he did & he also had elocution lessons in Leicester before he went to RADA to try & lose his local accent . Suppose what I really meant is that his voice somehow didnt match his face if you get my meaning ! It almost makes me feel that he was putting the ” posh ” accent on a bit to make others think he was well bred but we’ll never know if that’s the case or not , it’s just my opinion in any case , you may disagree !

He was at RADA in the 1950s, so he would have had to learn to be well spoken in order to get on.
